World Thinking Day – February 22, 2010
This is a day that Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting celebrate international friendship and World peace. Troop 1874 celebrated this event with a special guest speaker. Holmdel Junior Troop consultant Sheila Weisfeld shared her wealth of knowledge of the more than 50 years she has been in the Girl Scouts. Troop 1874 was very excited to learn about Mrs. Weisfeld’s Girl Scouting experiences here in our area and abroad. She shared with the Troop, her memories, experiences and memorabilia of the different Girl Scout World Centers she has visited over the years.
Mrs. Weisfeld also spoke briefly of the origins of the World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and how they acquired some of their World Centers. She also reflected on the many friends she has made from around the Nation and the World from participating in the activities these centers have to offer the Girl Scouts of all ages. As the meeting concluded, Mrs. Weisfeld presented Junior Troop leaders, Nina Elliott and Linda Fernand with a friendship pin she brought with her from her recent trip to the Our Cabana Center in Mexico. She also led Troop 1874 in the ‘World Thinking Day’ friendship circle closing ceremony.
Afterwards, ‘Thinking Day’ patches were awarded to all the girls and a special 2010 pin was presented to Mrs. Weisfeld for her presentation to and assistance in Troop 1874 obtaining the ‘Girl Scouting Around the World’ badge.
Also, in keeping with this year’s Thinking Day theme:’ To End World Hunger’, and as a final item for the evening, the Troop participated in voting unanimously to make a monetary donation to a charitable foundation to do our part to end World Hunger.

Pajama Day - Thinking Day - February, 2010
Girl Scout Junior Troop 1248 hosted their “First Annual P.J. Program Party” for World Thinking Day and invited other Holmdel Girl Scout Troops as well. The Pajama Program (www.pajamaprogram.org) was founded by Genevieve Pitturro and Alice Quirk and has now grown nationwide. Geri Schleich, the Chapter President of Middletown, shared a slide show about the Organization and it’s wonderful outreach program. She shared many personal stories as a volunteer for many years, which added a very special personal touch. The Pajama Program provides new pajamas and books to children of various ages that are in need. They receive contributions from generous supporters and fundraising events throughout the year. Most of the children are waiting to be adopted and placed in permanent homes. “This program is a wonderful way of teaching my girls to reach out and give support to a wonderful local Organization", stated Dina Hamwi, the Troop Leader. “The girls collected new pajamas and new childrens' books for children that have nothing to call their own”. Now, these foster care children will have at least one new pair of pjs and a book that they can cherish, love and call their own. This project continued this year's "Thinking Day" theme of fighting poverty and hunger.
The “P.J. Program party” was a success and all the girls were proud of their total contribution of pajamas & books. They enjoyed a cup of hot cocoa & cookies, while they wrote out Valentine cards to be included with their pajama collection. The Troop has already made plans with Geri to host their “2nd Annual P.J. Party” next February for their World Thinking Day project and hope to have more Girl Scouts join them.
"The pajama program that troop 1248 presented for the entire service unit is a fantastic program! It was well received by all. It is another program that our family will personally support. It hits close to home as our older son went thru this system nearly thirty years ago in NY. We plan to make a yearly donation on Jon's birthday in March to the "Pajama Program" in NJ in his memory", stated Sheila Weisfeld, Holmdel's Brownie and Junior consultant. Fortunately, our webmaster, Mathew was there to make sure the audio videos worked well. Hopefully, this program will be continued in the future on a service unit level.
World Thinking Day Celebration -February, 2010
Brownie GS troop #903 (and two Daisy GS), participated in a project at St. Leo’s Church in Lincroft using the theme for World Thinking Day: together we can end extreme poverty and hunger.,
St. Leo’s Church supports 125 families in the Red Bank area with a weekend lunch program.. Every Saturday mornin, "Lunch Break," prepares 125 bag lunches for families who are not necessarily homeless, but who cannot support themselves well enough to be able to have three healthy meals a day. Included in the prepared lunch bags are two sandwiches, a tea bag, cup and snack
Cheryl Keefe, the director of this program, talked about her role and showed us the food pantry, which had a lot of bare shelves. There are many /volunteers who make these weekend meals possible: Our involvement came at a great time since the earthquake in Haiti; many of the funds which supported Lunch Break were redirected and thus the ‘snack’ portion of the meal had been eliminated. The Brownies and Daisies baked a batch of cookies and filled 125 bags with two cookies plus Valentine candy treats and a Valentine Card.
This experience was a great "eye opener" for all of the girls (and adults, too). This was both an educational and "fun". experience for everyone involved.
Holmdel Girl Scout Junior Troop 1248 visit Delicious Orchards
Junior Troop 1248 planned a fun afternoon at Delicious Orchards in Colts Neck. No, they didn’t spend time shopping for food, instead they went behind the scenes! They learned how the goodies were baked and how the delicious vegetables were stored. It’s all part of their goal in earning a “Food Power” badge for their Junior level. The girls were able to see just how the famous pies & donuts were made in the bakery section of the store. They were particularly amazed to see how large the industrial mixers were in person. They were a bit chilled as they walked through the giant refrigerators that stored all types of fresh fruits and vegetables from around the world. The girls learned about making healthy daily food choices from the “healthy pyramid” and how to properly select fresh fruit and vegetables. They were introduced to different fruits and vegetables such as the purple potato, star fruit & prickly pears. At the end of the tour they were treated to delicious powdered donuts! Who would have thought going to a food store would be so much fun?!
Junior Troop 1248 receive a “Leg Up” on Riding
Girl Scout Junior Troop 1248 attended a special program at the Sunnyside Equestrian Center in Middletown. The Sunnyside Equestrian Center is part of the135 acres in the Sunnyside Recreation Area. The girls received an overview on the anatomy of the horse and learned about the principle parts of the horse. They learned about horse handling techniques, caring, safety regulations, grooming and equipment overview. They especially enjoyed brushing the horses with the different grooming tools. The best part of their afternoon was being able to take a private riding session, where they learned the basics of riding. They learned how to mount, turn, steer, stop and dismount a horse. The girls giggled a bit, while they learned how to walk and trot with their horses. They certainly overcame any fears that they might of experienced prior to walking into the center. The riding staff had a lot of patience and were just great with all the girls.
This wonderful program was graciously paid for by the Clean Customers, LLC. Clean Customers is a technology service firm that focuses on the science of managing and using customer data to discover growth opportunities and drive operational excellence for business of all sizes. They heard about the Troops extended community services and mostly their dedication and outstanding achievements in promoting detail recycling procedures within the Holmdel school district. It was their way of saying thanks for a great job! The girls from Junior Troop 1248 were grateful for this wonderful experience and would like to thank the Clean Customer LLC for the unforgettable experience. Thanks to Clean Customer Service the girls were able to earn a Girl Scout “Horse Rider” badge.
